Aggsbach Charterhouse

The Aggsbach Charterhouse is a former Carthusian monastery ( OCart ) in Aggsbach village in Lower Austria.

History

The monastery was founded in 1380 by Heidenreich of Maissau. From 1387 to 1391, Michael was from Prague Prior of Aggsbach.

Until the 18th century, the monastery owner of several lordships in Lower Austria ( including Purgstall, Seiterndorf, Großmugl, Külb, Kühbach and straw village) was - in 1723 there were a total of twelve.

1782 the monastery was abolished by Emperor Joseph II and converted into a castle. Parts of the monastery were taken in the premises of the parsonage, the looped Kartäuserzellen and the great cloister. The Carthusian received an attached to the chancel and steeple was a parish church. Investigations by the Federal Monuments Office in the course of the excavations in the former cells tract of Aggsbach Charterhouse in 2010 suggest that the building material dates back to the church tower of the broken cells.

Today, there is a Kartause, and event center.
