Agilulfus of Cologne

Agilolf of Cologne was from 745 to about 752 bishop of Cologne.

Life

Traditions of the 11th century see Agilolf as Abbot of Stavelot - Malmedy, before he became bishop of Cologne. He was appointed to the office of bishop of Cologne took place about the year 745 at the request of the Frankish kingdom aristocracy. Agilolf was a representative of the reform movement to the St. Boniface. His participation at the last Synod of Boniface is evidenced by a letter Pope Zacharias ' from 1 May 748. Worship

Agilolf is today revered as a saint. Its associated feast day is July 9; on that day his alleged remains were transferred in 1092 to Cologne. In later traditions Agilolf is often equated with a slain by robbers monk of Malmedy; the current state of knowledge, these are some mistake. The bones of this slain monk was later Archbishop of Cologne, Anno II to Cologne lead. According to him, a street in Cologne -Neustadt -Süd area was named.

Agilolf altar and shrine

The 5.50 m high and almost 7 meters wide, carved originated around 1520 in Antwerp and is considered by the cathedral architect Barbara Schock -Werner for his extraordinary character and wealth of imaginative costumes as one of the most important and largest of its time. He was originally in the church Mariengraden next to the cathedral and gelangete after its demolition in 1817 in the cathedral.
