Agios Kirykos (Greek Άγιος Κήρυκος ( m. sg. ) ) Is a small town with about 2218 inhabitants ( 2011) on the Greek island of Ikaria. Together with the local communities Chrysostom and Perdiki it forms since the administrative reform in 2010 the municipality of Agios Kirykos ( Δημοτική Ενότητα Αγίου Κηρύκου ) in the newly created municipality Ikaria.

1918 recognized as a rural community ( kinotita ), Agios Kirykos was enlarged over time by incorporations and 1964 on the municipality ( dimos ) levied. 1997 saw the incorporation of the neighboring communities.

Location

The municipality of Agios Kirykos occupies the eastern part of Ikaria. At its entire length the island from northeast to southwest from Atheras Mountains is ( Αθέρας; old name Pramnos Πράμνος ), traversed. The border to the westerly district Evdilos extends over a length of about 7 km in the immediate vicinity of the main ridge. This is also the highest point on the island, the 1037 m high Efanos ( Εφανός ), only 2 km from the south coast. The closest islands are Fourni 10 km and 19 km east of Samos. In the south east of Patmos is 35 km away. After Mykonos in the West is 45 km away and Chios is located about 70 km north.

Structure

The municipality is divided into the Municipality Agios Kirykos and two local communities with numerous straggling settlements. The population figures are from the census of 2011.

Agios Kirykos Αγίος Κηρύκος ( m. sg. ) Is the administrative seat of the municipality Ikaria. Together with the surrounding settlements it counts 2955 inhabitants, the small town of Agios Kirykos even 2218 inhabitants. East of Agios Kirykos a Neolithic settlement was discovered. The foundations and floors of the ruins of stone, round and have a diameter of 3.70 m to 5.20 m. More Archaeological finds prove a settlement in ancient times.   • Therma ( Θέρμα (n. pl. ) ) Is 2 km northeast of Agios Kirykos the sea. Therma was a colony of Miletus on Ikaria.   • Xylosyrtis ( Χυλοσύρτης ( m. sg. ) ) Is a sea-front village 5 km south of Agios Kirykos. The place was known in Greece for the production of apricots. Today's generation served only the local market and reaches about one tenth of the peak production in the 1940s. Near the village the source is located Athanato Nero ( Αθάνατο Νερό ). The water has a therapeutic effect, among other things rumored for stomach ailments.

Perdiki ( Περδίκι (n. sg. ) ) Lies on the north side of the island, about 370 meters above sea level, 6 km north of Agios Kirykos. The name was first mentioned in a treaty from 1681. In the village Miliopo ( Μηλιωπό (n. sg. ) ) Are the remains of an early Christian basilica from the 4th century AD.

Chrysostom ( Χρυσόστομος ( m. sg. ) ) Is located 6 km southwest of Agios Kirykos in elevation of 300 meters.
