Agira

Agira is a city in the province of Enna in Sicily region of Italy with 8430 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

The community Agira located 37 kilometers east of Enna at an altitude of 650 meters above Lake Pozzillo. Agira is located on the SS 121 Adrano - Leon Forte.

Agira covers an area of ​​163.11 km ². The inhabitants live on agriculture, there are cereals, legumes, almonds, olives, and wine. In the trades, there are other jobs in joinery and forging. In the vicinity of Agira there are also quarries and mineral water springs.

The neighboring municipalities are Assoro, Castel di Iudica (CT ), Catenanuova, Enna, Gagliano Castelferrato, Nissoria, Ramacca (CT) and Regalbuto.

History

Agira was founded in 399 BC as a Greek city. The former name was Agyrion. After rulers include the Romans and the Arabs. From Arabic time the situation is still preserved. In 1693 the church was badly damaged by an earthquake.
