Distribution and occurrence

The range of the species includes a wide belt of the middle and northern states of the USA and many parts of Canada. In Colorado, the butterflies also migrate into higher mountainous situations in which they do not propagate, since there are no food plants. Aglais milberti preferred inhabited open, partially swampy areas and forest edges.

Way of life

The moths fly depending on the climatic conditions in one to three generations per year. Their last overwinters as moths. They fly at a rapid flight in the sunshine, sucking nectar of flowers, and sometimes tree sap and like to rest on stony ground. The females lay several hundred eggs in groups on the underside of the leaves of the food plant. Young caterpillars first live socially in a spun, nest -like structure at the top of the food plant. Adults caterpillars live individually and sometimes hide in a rolled and spun sheet. They feed on nettle family ( Urticaceae ).
