Aglianico del Vulture

Aglianico del Vulture is a red wine from the Vulture area in Basilicata (Italy ), which has been awarded since 1971 to the quality level of DOC.

On the slopes of Mount Vulture, the grapes are harvested very late because the Aglianico vine ripens late. The vineyards are situated at an altitude up to 800 m and belong to the part of the highest in Europe. The best qualities grow at an altitude of 250-500 m. The 1437 hectares of vineyards divided in 1192 winemaker. The following municipalities have approved of vines: Rionero in Vulture, Barile, Rampolla, Ripacandida, Ginestra, Maschito, Forenza, Acerenza, Melfi, Atella, Venosa, Lavello, Palazzo San Gervasio, Banzi, Genzano di Lucania.

The best wines are complex, structured and durable, they can mature up to ten years in the cellar.

Depending on the storage time in barriques two quality levels are distinguished: vecchio after 3 years or Riserva after 5 years. Because of the similarities in taste and production of Aglianico del Vulture is also called the " Barolo of the South".

  • Alcohol content: 12 to 13.5 percent by volume
  • Serving temperature: 17-18 ° C, the wine should be uncorked at least an hour before serving and well ventilated.
