Agneaux

Agneaux [ aɲo: ] is a commune of the department of Manche in Basse-Normandie region. Administratively, it is assigned to the Canton of Saint- Lô -Ouest and the arrondissement of Saint- Lô.

Geography

The streets and residential settlement with 4192 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) is located in a flung eastward flow loop of the Vire immediately west of the town of Saint -Lô. It is crossed by the road department D900 that runs from Saint- Lô and Coutances.

History

During the construction of the ring road of Saint- Lô after the first archaeological finds rescue excavations were carried out. These tests showed clearly that the area was inhabited in prehistoric times. Most tracks found date from the Bronze Age, including a large necropolis. But even everyday objects from the Middle Ages was brought to light.

Toponyms

The medieval village name is derived from the Old French word Agnel (French agneau, dt " lamb "). It is believed that there was once even spot a sheep breeding.
