Agnes of Antioch

Agnès de Châtillon (* 1153, † 1184 ) was a princess of Antioch from the noble Châtillon and by marriage Queen of Hungary. She became the ancestress of the later kings of Hungary, which virtually all descended ruling houses of Europe from her.

Life

She was the daughter of Renaud de Châtillon -sur -Loing (* 1124, † 1187 ) and his wife, Princess Constance of Antioch.

She grew up at the court of the Byzantine Emperor Manuel I.. In 1172 she was at the age of 19 years with the Hungarian King Béla III. married. In Hungary, they took the name Anna.

She died after five years of marriage at the age of 24 years, after she had given birth to six children. She was buried in the Basilica in Székesfehérvár, later, her body was transferred to the Matthias Church in Budapest.
