Agnes of Assisi

Agnes of Assisi ( * 1197 or 1198 in Assisi, Italy, † August 27 1253 in San Damiano in Assisi ) was Klarisse and the sister of St. Clare of Assisi.

Life

Agnes came from the rich Italian noble family of the Offreducci in Assisi. In early April of the year 1212, she followed her sister Clara to San Damiano, which had occurred only sixteen days in front of her, which was founded there by her community to live a life according to the example of Saint Francis of Assisi as a nun.

Trying her family to abduct her from there failed: Your uncle Monaldo had been sent along with armed horsemen to force Agnes to return. The legend tells that his sword failed him the service, when he raised it against Agnes. Even when the rider tried to drag Agnes from the monastery, was her body became so heavy that all their efforts were unsuccessful.

Around the year 1220 (1219 or 1221 ) it was St. Francis of Assisi in consultation with Cardinal Ugolino on the management of the convent of Monticelli, near Florence. From Monticelli from Agnes founded several monasteries, including the monasteries in Mantua, Venice and Padua.

1253, she returned to San Damiano to the death- bed of her sister Clara, who died on 11 August of the same year. Agnes followed her a short time later.

Her body was interred next to her sister in the church of Santa Chiara in Assisi.

Pope Benedict XIV said Agnes of Assisi 1753 holy.
