Agnethe Davidsen

Agnethe Davidsen ( born August 29, 1947 in Nuuk ( Godthåb ), Greenland, † November 25, 2007 ibid ) was a Greenlandic politician of the Social Democratic Siumut. She was the first woman minister in Greenland and 14 years Mayor of the capital Nuuk.

Youth and Family

Agnethe Davidsen was the daughter of Villy Wael (1928-1998) and Agathe Lund ( 1923-2007 ). On 30 May 1966 she married the blacksmith Aqqaluartaaq Davidsen ( born September 19, 1941 in Qeqetalik, Spring Hill, son of Charles Davidsen and Amalie Rasmussen). Together they got the children Søren (* 1965) and Heidi (1967 ).

Agnethe Davidsen grew up in a strict home with her grandparents in Nuuk. During the school holidays she worked in a kindergarten, and it was her greatest wish, later to become self kindergarten teacher. However, there was at that time in Greenland no training for kindergarten teachers, and when she wanted for this purpose to Denmark, she learned before her future husband, whom she married in 1966 at the age of 18 years. Also because of her son, she changed her career aspirations and made the shorter trading and clearing for education in Denmark (similar to office clerk ).

After her graduation in 1970 she got a job at the Regional Court in Nuuk, where she was from 1979 District Judge. It thus acquired a deep insight into the social life of the city.

Political career

In 1983, she came as the successor of Hans Pavia Rosing for the Social Democratic Siumut the Greenlandic Parliament, the county council. In the same year she was appointed as Minister of Social Affairs in the Greenlandic national government. This made her the first woman in the government. However, this government fell in 1984 on a fisheries agreement with the EU, and Agnethe Davidsen was not yet established enough to be re-elected as national politician. Only in 1995 she managed the re-entry into the country Sting.

In 1989 she was elected to the city council of Nuuk and was until 1991 Second Deputy Mayor. 1991-1993 she was First Deputy Mayor, and from 1993 to 2007 First Mayor of the capital city. This office was connected to them with increasing influence and popularity. She has held several honorary positions. In 1997, she was honored for its political use as a Knight of the Dannebrog.

Last Agnethe Davidsen was re-elected in April 2005, with a record as mayor of Nuuk.

Agnethe Davidsen was admitted to the State Hospital in Nuuk with severe headache on November 24, 2007, and died the next day from the effects of a cerebral hemorrhage. She leaves behind her two adult children.
