Agostino di Duccio

Agostino di Duccio, even Agostino da Firenze (* 1418 in Florence, † 1481 in Perugia ) was an Italian sculptor of the Renaissance.

Life

Duccio was a mercenary in his youth and led a rather tumultuous life, later he became a pupil of Donatello. He created his first major work in Rimini (1449-1457), where he decorated the interior of the Malatesta Temple, which has just been rebuilt by Leon Battista Alberti. For the Oratorio di San Bernardino in Perugia, he created in the years 1457-60 remarkably beautiful work, mostly as bas-reliefs. 1462 he returned to Florence, where he completed a large sculpture for the Cathedral, which was lost, however. He also was awarded the contract, the David sculpture, which is now known as Michelangelo's masterpiece to create. But he failed in this task. Lived during his last years, he worked again in Perugia.
