Agostino Straulino

Agostino Straulino ( born October 10, 1914 in Lussinpiccolo (Island Losinj ), † 14 December 2004 ) was an Italian sailors and naval officer. He won an Olympic gold medal and a silver medal in the Star class, eight consecutive European championships and two world championships in this class and was world champion in the 5.5m class.

Straulino made ​​his first sailing experience as a child on the Istrian coast of the northern Adriatic. He later attended the Naval Academy in Livorno, and was for a time during his naval career commander of the sail training ship Amerigo Vespucci and was eventually Rear Admiral.

Between 1949 and 1956 he won eight consecutive European championships in the Star class. 1952 and 1953 he was also a world champion in this class. The highlight of his career as an athlete was winning the gold medal in 1952 at the Olympics in front of Helsinki. Four years later he won the silver medal ahead of Melbourne. After the separation of his bowman Nico Rode Straulino took with his new Vorschoter Carlo Rolandi at two other Olympic Games in the Star class (Rome 1960, fourth place) and the 5.5m class ( Tokyo 1964, fourth place) part. A year later he became commander of Amerigo Vespucci and won in the same year the World Cup in the 5.5m class.

He continued to participate in regattas on larger boats and won the Eintonner Cup Porto Cervo 1973 and the Italian long-distance race Giraglia.
