History

1911 joined nine Jewish communities of Russian and Polish immigrants, each of whom had his own oratory, under President Joseph Landau to the Association Agoudas Hakehilot ( אֲגֻדָּת - הַקְּהִלּוֹת ) together to jointly build a synagogue. They acquired in the Rue Pavée a parcel that was only 30 feet deep and almost 12 feet wide, but was in the middle in the Marais district, where many Jewish immigrants had settled from Eastern Europe in the 19th century. With the construction of the synagogue, the famous architect Hector Guimard was commissioned, who had, in the upmarket west of Paris, already built several houses in the 16th arrondissement and designed the Art Nouveau entrances to the Paris Métro. He was married since 1909 with Adeline Oppenheim, who came from a New York Jewish family. In April 1913, the foundation stone was laid and as early as October of the same year, the synagogue was used, although the official opening was held in June 1914.
