Red bent grass ( Agrostis capillaris )

The bunch grasses ( Agrostis ) is a genus in the family of grasses ( Poaceae ). The White bentgrass ( Agrostis stolonifera ) has a meaning as a sports turf grass, that is, on golf greens, as it can withstand a cut back to four millimeters in length.

Description

Bunch grasses are clump -forming, reed-like habit of grasses that form short underground runners and are not greater than 1 meter. The linealischen leaves are 5 to 11 mm wide and the youngest leaves appear rolled in cross-section and not folded when cutting. The often significantly grooved, bare, rigid leaves have a hairless leaf sheath and quite long pointed ligule.

The panicles are usually yellowish or reddish, but there are green colored. The lower branches of the panicle are apparently three or more in the Rispenachse, but there are only two basal branches. The spikelets flowered, very fine, awnless, stalked and single standing, and they appear on the page compressed. The Ährchenachse is also bald and not hairy. Between envelope and lemma there are no empty husks.

Occurrence

Most bunch grasses bloom between June and September. They are in full bloom, especially in the early summer months. They grow both wet and relatively dry surface and can occur on nutrient-rich fields and nitrogen-poor meadows. Most bunch grasses are also hardy and enduring. They occur on the northern and southern hemisphere in temperate zones.
