Agua Azul

The Cataratas de Agua Azul ( Blue Water Waterfalls ) are a landmark in the Mexican state of Chiapas. The falls are located 69 km southwest of Palenque by the road to Ocosingo and San Cristóbal de las Casas. In the further course of the river there are the waterfalls of Agua Clara and Misol -Ha.

Overall, there are the waterfalls from over 500 individual cascades that reach a height of two to 30 meters. The high mineral content of the water gives the waterfall cascade a very intense lighting, the color changes from basin to basin, colorfulness of an azure shade of blue to dark emerald green are seen during the dry season. In the rainy season the falls are brown.

Due to the high lime content of the water, there are numerous stalactite formations along the cascade. The cases extend over a distance of about six kilometers and are a tourist attraction; between the wide, mostly low cascades also exist swimming. However, not all pools are for swimming, numerous built for Drowned crosses warn here.
