Aguamilpa Dam

The Aguamilpa Dam ( Spanish: " embalse de Aguamilpa " or " presa Aguamilpa " ) is located in Mexico on the Rio Grande de Santiago in the state of Nayarit approximately 50 km north of Tepic. Other nearby towns are Nayar, La Yesca and Santa María del Oro.

The 1993 -built dam is 187 meters high and one of the largest in Latin America. The reservoir holds nearly 7 billion cubic meters. It dams the Santiago to 50 km in length and the Huaynamota to 20 km. The associated hydroelectric power plant generates 960 megawatts. It is one of the largest in the country and will be expanded in a second phase to 1600 MW.
