Aguiar da Beira is a small town ( Vila ) in the north of Portugal, in the district of Guarda and statistical Centro region. It is located in the mountains of Serra da Lapa at an altitude of 807 meters. It has 1475 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011). It is also the headquarters of a district of the same name ( Municipio ).

History

The exact date of the founding of Aguiar da Beira is unknown, tracks lead back to Celtic and Roman settlements. Among the Romans, a castle was built, the remains of which still exist today. Around the castle, a Roman city had developed. After the Moorish conquest of large parts of the Iberian Peninsula, the city was in the Kingdom of León, which had remained under Christian rule. Nevertheless, we succeeded the Moors 985, Aguiar da Beira to occupy temporarily. Aguiar da Beira in 1120 received the first newer municipal law (according to another opinion in 1258 ), which was renewed in 1512 by King Manuael I.. (1261 - 1325) in 1300 the city under King Dinis had been awarded the right to hold its own exhibition, which was only significant cities allowed.

Next to the ruins of the Roman fort can be found in the city, a restored in 1777, the clock tower from the 15th century and a pillory from 1512 and an old former Benedictine monastery.

Aguiar da Beira is the seat of an eponymous district ( concelho ) in the District of Guarda. June 30, 2011 had the circle 5521 inhabitants in an area of 206.8 km ².

The neighboring districts are (clockwise starting from the north ): Sernancelhe, Trancoso, Fornos de Algodres, Penalva do Castelo and Sátão.

Demographics

According to the last census from 2011, the district has 5,521 inhabitants, after 1960 counted 10,215 residents. The strong shrinkage is attributed to emigration and migration to the big cities.

Economy

The circle is dominated by agriculture, especially livestock and fruit growing are mentioned. The industry is represented in particular with companies in the wood processing and the food industry. In the circle ores are mined. Tourism has gained in importance, Cavaca is next to Turismo rural primarily in 1924 appointed after a 1995 closure since 2008, newly opened Caldas da important.
