Agustin Cueva

Agustín Cueva Dávila ( born September 23, 1937 in Ibarra, † 1 May 1992, Quito ) was an Ecuadorian sociologist, literary critic and intellectual.

Life

Cueva came from an important family of intellectuals in Ecuador. His father Agustín Cueva Sanz (1872-1938) was professor of sociology and law, multiple deputy in the Ecuadorian Parliament and Chairman of the Constituent Assembly in 1928 ( convened by his cousin Isidro Ayora ). His grandfather Manuel Benigno Cueva (1843-1918) was a supporter of the Liberal Party Eloy Alfaro and as such Chairman of the Constituent Assembly in 1896 and vice president under Alfaro 1897 until 1899.

Agustín Cueva Dávila studied social sciences at the Catholic University of Ecuador and his doctorate from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris. He was a professor in Quito, Concepción (Chile) and at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. His work is characterized by a critical Marxism and an interest in social struggles. He died at the age of 54 from lung cancer.
