Agustín Gamarra

Agustín Gamarra ( born August 27, 1785 Cuzco, † November 18, 1841 in Ingavi, Bolivia ) was a Peruvian -General and President of Peru from 1 September 1829 to 20 December 1833 a second time on 25 August 1838 to November 18, 1841.

Gamarra studied theology at the University of San Buenaventura, but resigned before completing his studies as a volunteer in the Spanish army. He served in Bolivia, fought against Argentina and was promoted to lieutenant colonel. In 1821 he was assigned to Lima and was commander of the 2nd battalion of the regiment of Cuzco. Here he joined the Independent and was promoted to colonel and brigadier general. Until 1824 he served under Simón Bolívar and Antonio José de Sucre.

He was then prefect of Cuzco and in 1828 commander of the army in the battles against Bolivia. On his return to Lima, he spoke out against the then President of Peru José de La Mar, even provisional President and the same year was elected regular president. In 1839 he was re-elected as President of Peru.

During the Battle of Ingavi on November 18, 1841 Gamarra was killed.
