Agustín Stahl

Agustín Stahl ( born January 21, 1842 in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, † July 12, 1917 in Bayamón, Puerto Rico ) was a Puerto Rican physician and scientist with diverse interests in the fields of ethnology, botany and zoology. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " A. Steel ".

Life and work

Steel was the son of a German father and a Dutch mother. After leaving school in Aguadilla, he studied at the universities of Würzburg and Prague, where he graduated in 1864 as a doctor of medicine. Upon his return to Puerto Rico in Bayamón, he opened a medical practice. He spent his free time with field research in the fields of ethnology, botany and zoology. Even in history steel had a great interest.

Published between 1883 and 1888 steel, the six -part work Estudios sobre la flora de Puerto Rico ( A study of the Puerto Rican Flora), in the 1330 Puerto Rican plant taxa are listed from different botanical gardens in the world. His studies were the basis for numerous expert articles in which many new plant taxa were first described scientifically.

Steel was a staunch supporter of Puerto Rican independence from Spain. He was a member of autonomy Partido Autonomous Ista Puertorriqueño. The group attempted a political and legal identity for Puerto Rico to achieve. In 1898 he was released and deported because of his political views from his professor post at the Instituto Civil de Segunda Enseñanza in San Juan. After Puerto Rico became the sovereignty, he returned to the island.

Agustin Stahl died in Bayamón, where his remains were buried in the town cemetery. Steel house is now a museum. The Puerto Rican sculptor Tomás Batista created a bust in his honor, which can be seen in the University of Cayey.

This and that

After Christmas 1866 steel decorated a tree in his garden, that of the inhabitants Bayamóns " El Arbol de Navidad del Doctor Stahl" ( Dr. steel Christmas tree ) was baptized. Since then, the custom of decorating Christmas trees is also in Puerto Rico.

Dedikationsnamen

After steel, the critically endangered species Stahlia monosperma from the family of carob plants ( Caesalpinioideae ) and the taxa Argythamnia stahlii, Senna pendula var stahlii, Eugenia stahlii, Lyonia stahlii and Ternstroemia stahlii are named.
