Ahal Province

Ahal Welaýaty (formerly Ашхабадская область / Aschchabadskaja Oblast ) is one of the five provinces of Turkmenistan.

The province is located south of the center in the country, bordering Iran and Afghanistan. The Turkmen capital Ashgabat is enclosed by it, it is also the capital of the province, but is administratively a separate capital district ( Ashgabat şäheri ).

In the south of the province is crossed by the Karakum Canal, there is also the focus of the population. In the north, it has a share in the Karakum Desert.

The area is 95,100 km ², its population (2006) about 892,000, thus resulting in a population density of about 9 inhabitants / km ².

The largest towns in the province include the provincial capital Änew, Büzmeýin and Tejen.
