Ahanta people

The Ahanta are an ethnic group from the group of West African Akan peoples.

Today about 130,000 Ahanta populate an approximately 10 km wide coastal strip in the Western Region in southwestern Ghana between cities Axim and Sekondi -Takoradi ( see map).

Ahanta is one of the " dying languages ​​" of Ghana. In the primary schools in the area Fante is taught as a written language. There is a considerable Akkulturationsdruck the part of the west adjacent Nzema and especially the east adjacent Fanti. Much of the speaker is bilingual, thus saith as well one of these two neighboring languages.
