Ahava rabbah

Ahava Rabbah (Hebrew אַהֲבָה רָבָה; German great love ) is a blessing, which is spoken in the Jewish morning prayer ( Shacharit ) shortly before the Shema.

Description

The recitations of religious obligations ( mitzvot, plural of mitzvah ) is always preceded by a benediction. Since the speaking of the " Shema " in Judaism is a religious duty ( mitzvah ), and the " Shema " is introduced in daily prayer with a blessing. This function satisfies Ahawah Rabbah, which is already known in the Mishna ( Berachot 1:4). There is specified, the text comes of the morning prayer in the temple.

The blessing that is passed down in Ashkenazi Judaism as Ahava Rabbah, is found in the Sephardic and Italian rite as " Ahavat Olam " again. This distinction is already mentioned in the Talmud ( Berachot 11b) and apparently based on two different traditions, that of the Jews from Babylon, and that of the Jews in the Land of Israel. Well to addressing both traditions, took over the Ashkenazic communities a shorter prayer called " Ahavat Olam " in their ritual and placed it in front of the " Shema " in the evening. The text, however, differs from Ahava Rabbah and is much shorter. In Sephardic prayer books and other rites merely " Ahavat Olam " is being used.

Main subject of the text is the thanks for the revelation of the Torah and the prayer for the gathering of diaspora Jews " from all four corners " of the world.

Speaking of Ahava Rabba fulfilled the commandment of Torah study. In general, verses from the Torah during the morning prayer ( Birkat Hashachar, Hebrew בִּרְכוֹת הַשַּׁחַר ) carried forward. However, if these verses are not carried forward during the morning prayer, one fulfills this duty by presentation of Ahava Rabba. However, the presentation of this requirement is not satisfied when the Shema is composed of verses of the Torah.

It is customary, when speaking of Ahava Rabba the four fringes ( Zizijot ) of the prayer shawl ( tallit ) to take in hand, while speaking the words on the four corners of the world. The petitioner holds then throughout the Shema in hand, they will be kissed in the third section of the Schmas and Hebrew אֱמֶת וְיָצִיב released while speaking the following Emet we- Jaziw.
