Ahearne Cup

Ahearne Cup is the name of two hockey tournaments. The first was held from 1952 to 1977, the second in 2001 re-established. Both are named after a British ice hockey player Bunny Ahearne.

The original Ahearne Cup

The first Ahearne Cup was held in 1957, with the exception of 1952 to 1977 each December in Sweden and co-organized by the daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter. The finals found this place in any host in Johanneshovs Isstadion in Stockholm. The competition could participate next club teams and national teams, although this rarely occurred. While most teams from Sweden were also numerous teams from Great Britain, the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Canada and Finland took part in the Ahearne Cup.

Most tournaments at the first Ahearne Cup can boast the tournament the Swedish clubs Södertälje SK and IF Djurgårdens with 20 starts, followed by Leksand IF and AIK Ishockey with twelve participating. Djurgårdens IF also won four times with the most competitive, followed by the Harringay Racers and the HK Spartak Moscow with three tournament victories.

Due to the participation of Canadian teams as well as British clubs where played many Canadian Legion, presented the Ahearne Cup for most European players first encounter with the North American style of play dar. With the increasing professionalisation in the North American Hockey consisted of Canadian and the narrowing of the European fixtures eventually led to the Ahearne Cup in 1977 held for the time being the last time.

The "new" Ahearne Cup

The new Ahearne Cup was founded in 2001 by the British Ice Hockey Superleague. At each competition, several teams of league play against other clubs. In 2004, teams played in the British Ice Hockey Super League against clubs from the German Ice Hockey League in 2003 were British against Norwegian team of elite series 2006 hit club of the newly formed British Elite Ice Hockey League teams in the DEL.
