Ahmadu Bello University

The Ahmadu Bello University ( ABU ) is the second largest university in Nigeria.

It is situated in Zaria, was established in 1962 as the University of Northern Nigeria. Currently, about 35,000 students are enrolled.

Was named the university after the Sardauna ( Caliph ) of Sokoto, Sir Ahmadu Bello, the first Prime Minister of Northern Nigeria. The ABU maintains a university hospital, which is one of the largest clinics in Nigeria simultaneously. It was primarily established for socially underprivileged who can not pay the relatively high health care costs.

The current Under Secretary General of the United Nations for Political Affairs, Ibrahim Gambari, was formerly Chairman of the Department of Political Science at the Ahmadu Bello University.
