Ahrweiler

The district of Ahrweiler is a district in the north of Rhineland -Palatinate, Germany. He is (clockwise), surrounded by the district of Euskirchen, Rhein- Sieg-Kreis and the independent city of Bonn in North Rhine -Westphalia, and the districts of Neuwied, Mayen -Koblenz and volcanic Eifel.

Geography

The Rhine forms the eastern border of the circle. The Ahr, a left tributary of the Rhine, crossed the county from southwest to northeast and ends at the county line.

The district Ahrweiler Bad Neuenahr -Ahrweiler is on the edge of the Eifel. The mountains north of the Ahr are called Ahrberge - but they are not as high as the High Eifel in the south of the district.

The forests of the Eifel are a result of reforestation in the 19th century. Most often, the spruce occurs, which was originally not typical of the region. The Rodder Maar, a water-filled shallow dip to the east of the circle, was drained in the 1950s and rehabilitated in 1998, which attracted less common animals. The volcanic origin of this sink has not yet been demonstrated.

The wine -growing region along the Ahr is one of the northernmost wine-growing regions in Germany, particularly known for red wine. The Nordschleife and Nürburgring, two well known racetracks are located in the district of Ahrweiler around the Nürburgring.

Highest point of the circle and also the entire Eifel is the Hohe Acht 747 m, the deepest is north of Remagen district Rolandswerth on the outskirts of Bonn.

History

The region was conquered by the Romans under Julius Caesar around 50 BC. Some years later, the military camp Castra Rigomagus was established, from which later the city was Remagen. The Vinxtbach, a close stream and tributary of the Rhine, the border between the Roman provinces of Germania Superior and Germania was inferior. In Ahrweiler, the famous Roman Villa Rustica is located on the Silver Mountain.
