Ahtopol

Achtopol [ ɐxtɔpoɫ ] ( Bulg Ахтопол ) is one of the smallest towns in Bulgaria and is located 87 km from Burgas on the Black Sea coast, a few kilometers from the border with Turkey. The distance to Sofia is 477 km.

Tourism

The city is a tourist resort and is located on a rocky peninsula at the foot of the beach Saddle Mountains, a Bulgarian national parks. Climatically, the place is characterized by a higher air and water temperatures than the average of Bulgaria. Achtopol has a two kilometers long, fine sand beach.

History

Archaeological finds show that there as early as 2000 BC a settlement existed where Achtopol is today. In the 6th century BC Achtopol was a Thracian harbor.

Another 200 years later, the settlement was an important Greek city under the name Agatopolis. Later, the Romans conquered the city and made ​​it a fortress. The city walls that they built stood until the 16th century AD Prior to that she had suffered under the Ottoman conquest of the city. Finally, they were almost completely destroyed by an earthquake.

At the end of the 18th century, the now ruling Ottomans settle Greek sailors and ship builders from around the Crimean Peninsula to Achtopol. 1918 destroyed almost the whole city a city fire. Only a few houses in the northern part of the peninsula and right on the sea remained.
