Fish River Canyon

The | Ai- | Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier Park [ Khi 1] (! Sometimes also referred to as Garib Transfrontier Park ) is an existing since August 1, 2003 transnational National Park between Namibia and South Africa. It consists of the formerly independent protection areas " Richtersveld National Park " and the field " | Ai- | Ais Hot Springs / Huns Mountains " together.

On 1 August 2003, the President of Namibia and South Africa signed the contract for the new Peace Park, which is now 6235 km ². Is the second largest canyon in the world, the Fish River Canyon, which is 350 million years old in it. The park is divided by the Namibian- South African border river Oranje. This new park is one of the Peace Parks in Southern Africa, since it connects across unlimited two state borders.

| Ai- | Ais Hot Springs / Huns Mountains are the parts of the transboundary protected area, located in Namibia. The 4611 square kilometer park is characterized by mostly flat, arid land that is the Fish River Canyon, the second largest canyon in the world, running through it. Since 1998, moreover, the Huns Mountains part of the conservation area.

There is also the thermal water resort | Ai- | Ais.

Richtersveld National Park

The Richtersveld National Park is the last "wild" National Park in the far north west of South Africa. The 1624 km ² large park is in the north and east, including the border to Namibia, the Orange River in the south of the national park is the Namaqualand with the cultural landscape of the Richtersveld, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Nature

The nature in the National Park is characterized by high mountains, deep gorges and extreme dryness. Typical species are leopard, mountain zebra, baboons, springbok, Klipspringer, Rehantilopen, steenbok, small reptiles and various species of birds.

However, the park is famous especially for its variety of succulent plants, many of which are endemic here.

History

The Richtersveld National Park was declared on 16 August 1991 on the conservation area. The treaty secured to the inhabitants of the area, the Nama, that they may exercise their previous activities including livestock in the natural park continues.

This national park is connected to the Fish River Canyon, and thus constitutes one of the 18 Peace Park in central and southern Africa, which extend beyond national boundaries.

Check-in

Climate

The extreme climate is characterized by high temperatures, drought, and high daily and seasonal fluctuations. In the summer a temperature of above 50 ° C are measured. At night it is generally cooler; in winter it can be very cold with ground frost. The annual rainfall is between 5 and 200 mm.
