Aimaq people

The Aimaken (also written Aimaq, from Persian ایماق / aymāq ) are a confederation of nomadic tribes of different origin, but today almost all speak Persian as their first language and live in the central region of Afghanistan. They make up about 2 % of the total population. The word aymāq is a borrowing from the neighboring Turkic languages of Central Asia ( oymāq ), meaning " clan " or " tribe" ( cf. Mongolian aimag ).

In Afghanistan they are mainly known as Chahar- Aymāq ( Four Aimaken ). The four main tribes are:

  • AIMAQ - Hazara ( Mongolian descent )
  • Dschamschedī ( of Iranian descent )
  • Fīrūzkūhī ( of Iranian descent )
  • Taymanī ( of Iranian descent )

Other, smaller groups are occasionally added to the four major tribes, including the Ḡalmanī, Maleki, Mīschmast, Sīāmūsā, Taheri, Timuri, Zuri and more.

The AIMAQ - Hazara it is not to the people of Hazara. In contrast to the Imami Hazara, the Hazara AIMAQ - Sunni Muslims and are often counted among the neighboring Tajiks.
