Aimé Morot

Aimé Nicolas Morot ( born June 16, 1850 in Nancy, Meurthe -et -Moselle department; † August 12, 1913 in Dinard, Ille -et -Vilaine ) was a French painter of academic realism.

Life

Morot got his first art lessons in his hometown (Atelier Thierry ). Later he went to Paris and was for two weeks students at the École des Beaux -Arts. Finding himself with his teachers - and Others Alexandre Cabanel - did not understand, he left school and continued his education largely self-taught.

From this time many of his sketches are from the Jardin des Plantes ( Botanical garden). It seems with success, as he was in 1873 awarded by the Académie des Beaux -Arts, the Prix de Rome. Around this time he married in Paris, a daughter of the painter Jean -Léon Gérôme.

1880 could Morot successful debut at the exhibition of the Salon des artistes françaises. As a result he was then seen until 1912 at this annual exhibitions regularly.

Reception

In his early works Morots works could still see no own style. At such Morot found but no later than by his portraiture. Alone and together with his family, he undertook several study trips to ( and through) North Africa and the Middle East undertook. On these trips but hardly created images and the few did not like many of his colleagues let him count to a representative of Orientalism.

" Je me suis assise enface you Morot avec une et je l' ai Etudie lorgnette. C'est le tableau qui me fait plaisir depuis que le plus complétement j'existe. Rien n'accroche, tout est simple, vrai, bien; tout est fait d' apres nature et ne rien en rappelle les affreuses beautés académiques et convenues. C'est à regarder adorable; la tête de l' est bien âne, le paysage, le manteau, les ongles des pieds. C'est heureux, c'est juste, c'est bien. "
