Air-independent propulsion

Outside air independent propulsion system (English: air -independent propulsion, short AIP) is a collective term, including submarine drives include either conventional ( diesel- electric), nor are nuclear. While diesel- electric submarines are instructed to run their diesel generator to fresh air, nuclear submarines are also independent of the outside air.

Outside air Independent submarines are characterized by the fact that they can drive a submarine more than 30 days without a supply of outside air.

Examples of air independent, non-nuclear drive:

  • Walter Drive
  • Circuit drive
  • Stirling engine ( in Swedish Gotland - class and the Japanese Soryu class realized, planned at the Australian Collins - class)
  • MESMA drive ( used on Pakistani submarines of the French Agosta - class, intended for French / Spanish export submarines Scorpène the class. )
  • Submarine construction
  • Ship propulsion
