Air Tanzania

Air Tanzania was a Tanzanian airline based in Dar es Salaam and based on the Dar es Salaam airport.

History

Air Tanzania was on 10 March 1977 in Dar es Salaam established after the dissolution of East African Airways. The airline began regional targets to fly and bought a Boeing 737-200 and a Fokker F- 27th

Air Tanzania was initially funded by the Government of Tanzania and the Air Tanzania Corporation. On 31 March 2003 the airline was taken over by the new company Air Tanzania Limited and started its operations on 1 April 2003 with the objectives of Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar and Johannesburg. This company was eventually renamed with a stake of South African Airways to Air Tanzania Company Limited. In December 2008, Air Tanzania was suspended by IATA with immediate effect. Incidents

• February 26, 1982: A Boeing 737 of Air Tanzania with 99 passengers on board was hijacked by five men one Tanzanian rebel organization, they demanded ransom and the resignation of then-President Julius Nyerere. The men were arrested and sentenced to several years in prison.
• February 13, 1988: Four rebels hijacked a Boeing 737 filled with 76 people, the pilot was able to go unnoticed it back to Dar es Salaam, where the people were sentenced to 15 years in prison.
