History

Air Tanzania was initially funded by the Government of Tanzania and the Air Tanzania Corporation. This company was eventually renamed with a stake of South African Airways to Air Tanzania Company Limited. In December 2008, Air Tanzania was suspended by IATA with immediate effect. Incidents

  • February 26, 1982: A Boeing 737 of Air Tanzania with 99 passengers on board was hijacked by five men one Tanzanian rebel organization, they demanded ransom and the resignation of then-President Julius Nyerere. The men were arrested and sentenced to several years in prison.
  • February 13, 1988: Four rebels hijacked a Boeing 737 filled with 76 people, the pilot was able to go unnoticed it back to Dar es Salaam, where the people were sentenced to 15 years in prison.
