Aira-Caldera

The Aira caldera (Japanese姶良 カルデラ, Aira - karudera ) is an approximately 17 × 23 km wide volcanic caldera in the south of the island of Kyūshū in Japan.

It was formed during a massive volcanic eruption of strength VEI -7 about 26-29000 years ago, which is 150 km ³ tephra uttered and Aira -Tn ash layer was formed. Another outbreak around 16,000 years ago in the north east of the Aira caldera was the Wakamiko caldera with around five kilometers in diameter. The capital of the prefecture Kagoshima and Sakurajima volcano of the 13,000 -year-old lying in the south of the Aira caldera. The Sakurajima, which emerged after the collapse of the boiler in the northern half of Kagoshima Bay, is one of the most active volcanoes of Japan.
