Airborne Express was an express delivery company and cargo airline had its headquarters in Seattle, Washington. She also had a second seat in Wilmington, Ohio.
History
Airborne was founded as Airborne Flower Traffic Association of California in 1946 to bring flowers in the state of Hawaii.
Airborne's first 22 years were pretty lackluster. Progress has been made slowly and the competition was virtually non-existent. But in 1968, the airline began to grow. As the first to Airborne merged with Pacific Air Freight of Seattle. Then the company headquarters moved to Seattle. Next, it was renamed the Airborne Freight Corporation.
11 years went by and in 1980 the company changed its name again in Airborne Express and bought Midwest Air Charter. Airborne Express made history when she became the first airline to operate its own airport: the Clinton County Air Force Base in Wilmington.
1988, the company began offering same-day deliveries after it bought Sky Courier.
1991 Airborne got three major contracts, one of which was of Volvo and in 1992 she founded Flight- Ready SM, a prepaid express mail and packages system.
In 1993, an Airborne storage fulfillment and marketing service Airborne Logistics System ( ALS).
Opened in 1994, the Airborne Ocean Services Division, the first new film distribution program for Hollywood since 1944. Moreover tied to relations with Vietnam.
1995 created the Airborne Airborne Alliance Group which caused many departments of the company. Airborne opened a second runway in Wilmington and Boeing 767 jets were added to the fleet.
1996, the share value had tripled, which led in February 1998 to a split of 1 to 2. In the same year Airborne Brokerage Services was founded.
1998 Airborne first appeared in the Fortune 500 list. Airborne's first of 30 ordered Boeing 767 were delivered to Wilmington and the airline won an award from The Business Consumer Guide.
1999 Airborne formed with the U.S. Postal Service an alliance that Airborne @ Home.
2000 was the year of many changes:
- Carl Donaway became the new president of the company. He sat through changes in management.
- Start of the first ground delivery service since the founding of the company.
2001 Airborne Express launched a "Ground Delivery Service " ( ground delivery ) and " 10:30 AM Delivery Service " ( next day delivery before half past ten clock ). Airborne.com launched its own services, such as the Small Business Center and Airborne eCourier.
On 14 August 2003, shareholders voted on the merger of Airborne and DHL. DHL is headquartered in Brussels, Belgium. DHL is owned 100 per cent of the German Post World Net.
The merger was final in 2004. DHL took over Airborne's ground operations and outsourced its air operations to ABX Air, Inc. of.
