Airdrie (North Lanarkshire)

Airdrie is a town in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. It lies on a plateau some 130 meters above sea level and about 19 kilometers east of Glasgow. Together with Coatbridge Airdrie forms the territory of the former Monklands. In 2001, Airdrie had 36 323 inhabitants, of whom 96 per cent were born in Scotland.

Etymology

Non- secure sources, the old name was Arderyth inter alia from the Gaelic " Ard Ruith " what a pasture or slope is up to a certain height.

History

The colonization of present-day area of Airdrie may be dated to the year 577 AD, when the Battle of Arderyth took place between Rydderych ( The Bountiful ), King of Strathclyde and Aeddam (The Perfidious ), king of the Kintyre peninsula. According to legend, Merlin took the bard in part on the side of Aeddam in the battle.

By the year 1162 the story Airdries is not documented by reliable sources.

The "Monks of Newbattle " built from the infrastructure Airdries. Initially used only as a traffic stop, soon settlements were established.
