Aire-la-Ville

Aire- la -Ville (French [ ɛʀ la vil ], Provençal in the local dialect [(a) ɛr la vɛla / ɛr la vəla ] ) is a village and a municipality in the canton of Geneva in Switzerland.

Aire- la- Ville is located on the left bank of the Rhone river on a loop. The municipal area is a part of the hydroelectric power plant Barrage de Verbois.

History

In the municipality remains of a Roman estate and graves from the Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages were found. First mentioned is the place in 1496 as Herkunftsbeizeichnung: Gervase Barberii, de Eyria, carpentator; 1511 he appears as Ayria Villa, 1572 as Ayre -la -Ville. The place name probably comes from the Latin Area, space, a 'market'; the later addition of Villa / -la -Ville is, settlement, village ', and serve the distinction from other towns of the same name.

Aire- la -Ville belonged from 1536 to 1564 to Bern before it to 1601 belonged to Savoy. Then belonged to the municipality of France. From 1716 to 1816 it belonged in turn to Savoy. With the Turin agreement of 16 March 1816, the community finally got to the Canton of Geneva.
