Aizenay

Aizenay is a French town with 8284 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Vendée in the Pays de la Loire.

Geography

Aizenay located 15 kilometers northwest of La Roche- sur -Yon, 53 kilometers south of Nantes, about 25 kilometers west of the coast of Vendée (cote vendéenne ). The Vie and the Jaunay flow through the municipality.

Aizenay is a climate of type Cfb ( according to Köppen and Geiger ) assigned: Warm Temperate rain climate ( C ), fully wet ( f), the warmest month below 22 ° C, at least four months above 10 ° C ( b). There is a maritime climate with moderate summer.

History

Aizenay was the capital of the Celtic tribe of Agesinates, so the name for the inhabitants of Aizenay is still Agésinates. In the dialect of the Poitevin ( a type of Langues d' oïl ) the inhabitants are, however, called Trjhous ( les toujours, " the Time ").

The coat of arms of the city is the old coat of arms of La Brosse Penthièvre family ( Viscount de Brosse, castle ruins today Brosse in Chaillac, and Comte de Penthièvre ). The La Brosse Penthièvre were from 1437 for four generations Seigneurs of Aizenay.

Culture and sights

Aizenay nationally represented with two flowers in the Conseil des villes et villages fleuris ( National Council of flowery towns and villages ). The " flowers " are awarded as part of a regional competition, a maximum of three flowers can be achieved.

Structures

The church of Saint -Benoît was built in 1904-1905 by architect Alcide Boutaud. It is located in the municipality owned and is since 2007 in the Additional List of Monuments historiques (historical monuments ) registered. In the church there are several gold work. A silver vessel for chrism from the second half of the 19th century and a Chalice, which has been produced 1798-1809 were classified in 1982 as a monument historique (MH ).

The Logis de Bonnefonds was built in the 16th century in the Renaissance style. From that time, only the windows, door and chimney have been preserved, which were registered in 1994 in the Additional List of Monuments historiques ( inscrit MH). The building is now in private ownership.

The castle La Marronnière ( " Castle of the chestnut grove ") was built in the 18th century on the foundations of a castle from the 14th century. It stands in a large park. 2008, it was renovated. It is privately owned and is for Bed & Breakfast (French Chambre d'hôtes ) used.

Local products

The municipal area controlled designation of origin (AOC ) butter ( Beurre Charentes -Poitou, the Charentes and Deux -Sèvres ) and protected geographical indications ( PGI ) beef ( boeuf de Vendée and du Maine ), Pork ( Porc de Vendée) apply, poultry ( Volailles de Challans and de Vendée), corn salad ( Mâche nantaise ) and brioche ( brioche vendéenne ).
