Aizuwakamatsu, Fukushima

Aizu Wakamatsu - (Japanese会 津 若 松 市, -shi ) is a city in Fukushima Prefecture in the northern part of Honshu, the main island of Japan. Here varnishes and lacquer ware are produced since the 16th century.

Geography

Aizu Wakamatsu - is the center of the Prefecture Aizu region and extends over the Aizu Basin (会 津 盆地, Aizu - bonchi ). To the east is the Inawashiro Lake.

Attractions

The castle Aizu Wakamatsu - even Tsurugajo (鶴ヶ城, " Crane Castle ", built in 1384 ), the Prince of Aizu was considered the strongest fortress in northeastern Japan. She was over 600 years at the heart of the city and was in the Boshin war after the Battle of Bonari pass the last retreat of the shōguntreuen troops under Otori Keisuke Saigō Tanomo and in Aizu. Destroyed in 1874 by the Meiji government, it was in 1965 converted into a museum.

In the herb garden Oyakuen grow over 200 species of medicinal herbs.

The samurai residence Aizu Bukeyashiki is a reproduction of a feudal estate with main annexe and servants' houses and a mill. The one-story main house has 38 rooms.

On the hill Iimoriyama are the graves of Byakkotai. Stands in memory of the young samurai of Aizu for instance a marble column from Pompeii ( a gift from Mussolini 1928) and a memorial stone " A German young knights of Aizu ", donated by the then German ambassador Hasso von Etzdorf.
