Ajo is a census -designated place in Pima County in the U.S. state of Arizona. The name derives from the Native American Tin Aja De Mu Vavi, the Tohono O'Odham used the decreases.

Ajo is located on Highway 85 near the junction with Highway 86 about 60 km from the border with Mexico. Nearby are far southeast, the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument and the Ajo Mountains. Until 1985 was in Ajo, a copper mining.

History

The Papago knew this place and used the copper in Ajo to win paint for body painting.
