The Academia Nauk (Russian Академия Наук ) is a stratovolcano in the southern part of the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia. The volcano is named after the Russian Academy of Sciences. The caldera rim reaches a maximum height of 1180 meters. At the end of the Pleistocene, respectively, about 30,000 years ago originated the two calderas Odnoboki (5 x 4 km) and Academia Nauk (3 × 5 km, completed by Karymskoje Lake). The only known historical eruption occurred on January 2, 1996, when during an explosive eruption from the caldera craters near the north-north- west side of basaltic and rhyolitic material with an estimated volume of 40 million cubic meters was ejected. Other previous eruptions in the area north of Lake Karymskoje were based on radiocarbon tests to about 950 BC, 3850 BC and 5500 ± 500 BC dates, the activities in the form of columns and pyroclastic eruptions flow occurred.
