Akaflieg München Mü22

The Akaflieg München Mü 22 is a glider student Fliegergruppe Akaflieg Munich V-tail.

History

With the support of the State Ministry of Transport and after relaxation of the building and flying ban by the Allies students Akaflieg Munich began under the leadership of Prof. Dr. -Ing. Julius Krauss in 1953 with the construction of its first aircraft after the Second World War. Here for the first time a laminar profile was used in the history of Akaflieg Munich. The first flight of the mu 22a took place in 1954, where it served primarily as a test aircraft for various tail configurations in the early years. Shortly after they had in 1959 ranked second in the open class of the German gliding championships, it was destroyed by an accident.

Shortly thereafter, work began on an improved version of the injured Mü 22a with the mu 22b. In 1964 its first flight the variant in which the same year during flight testing by a fraction of the tail also this aircraft was completely lost. However, the machine slipped after a successful emergency exit of the pilot relatively gently to the ground and was only slightly damaged.

Construction

The hull of the mu 22 is like all the pilots of the so-called Munich school from a fabric -covered steel tube frame. The areas that have a laminar profile, were also manufactured using conventional methods of wood. However, to obtain a uniform surface and dimensional accuracy, a very close rib spacing was chosen by only 110 mm, which meant an increased workload in the design and manufacturing. Therefore, this construction in terms of dimensional stability, compared to the modern plastic aviator. In order not to affect the flow of air to the upper wing surface, was dispensed with airbrakes and instead installed split flaps.

Variants

Mü 22a

The Mü 22a with its first flight in 1954 was conventional after the Munich school, so strung with steel tube fuselage and wooden wings were constructed. They served mainly as a test aircraft and went in 1959, shortly after the completion of the flight test by an accident lost.

Mü 22b

The Mü 22b retained the essential design elements of its predecessor. However, they received a pendulum - V-tail and in the front region of the body, a fiber - plastic shell, in order to reduce the flow resistance. The Mü 22b is also now flown yet (as of 2012) by the students of Akaflieg Munich on gliding center king village.

Mü 26 ( mu 22d)

End of the 1960s began with the work of another variant of the mu 22. However, the project quickly grew out about a variant, and so it was decided to rename the project in Mü 26. This has with her made entirely with fiber composites fuselage also only appear on the similarities to the Mü 22
