Äkäslompolo

Äkäslompolo [ ækæslɔmpɔlo ] is a village in the municipality of Kolari in Finnish Lapland. It is located on the same lake northeast of the main town of Kolari. Äkäslompolo had on 31 December 2005 394 inhabitants.

Äkäslompolo Ylläsjärvi next to the main departure point to the ski Yllästunturi, also briefly called Yllas. The Yllas ski area is characterized by a dense network of cross-country trails with a total length of 330 km, and the alpine ski area on Yllästunturi with 61 slopes and 29 lifts. In the summer Äkäslompolo is popular with hikers, anglers, canoeists and friends of other outdoor sports. In the village there are several hotels and a variety of holiday homes.

The landscape in Äkäslompolo is characterized by forested mountains, whose peaks are mostly above the tree line ( Fjell ). In the environment of Äkäslompolo are the seven fells Yllas (718 m), Lainio (613 m), Kesänki (535 m), Pyhä (495 m ), Kuka ( 474 m), Kuer ( 445 m) and Kellostapuli (416 m), which is why the place is known as the "Village of seven fells ". However, the Kuka is already on the territory of the municipality of Muonio, and the Lainio and the Pyhä on the territory of the municipality Kittila. There are also many lakes and vast moorland.

In addition to a variety of smaller bog lakes located near the city four major lakes: Äkäslompolo (216 m), Kesänkijärvi (217 m), Pyhajarvi (243 m) and Kukasjärvi (242 m). Pyhajarvi and Kukasjärvi lying on the territory of the municipality Kittila. The river flows through the Äkäsjoki Äkäslompolo, the river flows through the Kesänkijoki Kesänkijärvi and empties into the Äkäslompolo.

Äkäslompolo is in close proximity to the Pallas- Yllästunturi National Park. One of the three visitor centers, the Kellokas Visitor Center, located in Äkäslompolo.
