Akatekisch ( Acateco ) is a Mayan language, which is spoken by about 40,000 to 60,000 indigenous to San Miguel in the department of Huehuetenango in Guatemala Acatan.

Dissemination

Akatekisch is mainly spoken in the Municipalities of San Miguel and San Rafael La Independencia Acatan and parts of Concepción Huista, Nentón and San Sebastián in the Guatemalan department of Huehuetenango Coatán, also in adjacent areas of the Mexican state of Chiapas.

At the 2002 census in Guatemala gave 35 763 persons ( 0.3 %) Akateko as their native language; 39 370 persons ( 0.4%) described themselves as Akateken. According to SIL International, the Akatekische is spoken in 1998 of 48,500 mostly monolingual people in Guatemala, also of about 10,000 Guatemalan refugees and about 100 locals in Mexico in 1991.
