Akazu

The akazu ( Kinyarwanda: small house ) was an influential clan of Hutu from the north-western prefectures of Rwanda ( Ruhengeri and Gisenyi ), which was made up mainly of relatives and friends of former President Juvenal Habyarimana and his influential wife Agathe Habyarimana.

The members of the akazu occupied within the Hutu regime of President Habyarimana (1973-1994) important positions in politics, business, science and society. Their families were in access to secondary schools, universities and jobs as privileged.

The members of the akazu is attributed to movement in the early 1990s that led to the genocide of 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus in 1994 a central role in the radicalization of the Hutu Power.

Members of the akazu were founding members of the CDR ( Coalition for the Defence of the Republic), which was initially considered a hardliner wing of the ruling MRND ( Mouvement républicain national pour la démocratie et le développement ) and eventually split off as a separate party to the radicalization of the " Hutu push -Power "movement. In addition, members of the akazu instrumental in the formation of the radio station Radio - Télévision Libre des Mille Collines ( RTLM ) and the radical newspaper Kangura were involved, the essential propaganda organs of the movement were and hate propaganda against Tutsis and the RPF ( Rwandan Patriotic Front) had a decisive influence on the mobilization of the genocide of 1994.
