Akçaabat ( in ancient Platana ) is the name of a district town and a district in the northern Turkish province of Trabzon. The city, which is located on the Black Sea, was founded by Greek colonists from Miletus in the 7th century BC. Probably because of the numerous occurrences of plane trees Platana the colony was called. Akçaabat later was for centuries part of the Ottoman Empire and was also Polathane ( Eisenheim ) called, which is probably a corruption of the original Greek name.
