Ã…ke Pleijel

Åke Vilhelm Carl Pleijel ( born August 10, 1913 in Stockholm, † September 24, 1989 in Västerled ) was a Swedish mathematician.

Pleijel studied from 1932 in Stockholm, was a long time teacher and was established in 1940 with Torsten Carleman his doctorate at the University of Stockholm ( Proprietés asymptotiques des fonctions et de valeur propres Certain problèmes de vibration ). It was founded in 1949 professor at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, then in 1953. Lund University and finally in 1967 at the University of Uppsala In 1979 he retired.

Pleijel led in 1949 during a stay at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton with S. Minakshisundaram to study the Laplacian on compact Riemannian manifolds, named after two zeta functions. In their analytical treatment they used the heat equation (heat kernel ), which had a great influence on later works (Michael Atiyah, Raoul Bott, Patodi Vijay Kumar and others).

In 1952 he became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
