Aker (company)

Aker ASA is a Norwegian company with headquarters in Oslo. The company is listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange.

The company does business in the offshore, fishing, shipbuilding and construction area. The company is controlled by Kjell Inge Røkke 66.66 % above its TRG Holding. Aker ASA 25,386 people are employed (as of 2009). The turnover in 2008 amounted to 6.395 billion NOK and additionally in related but non-consolidated companies (eg Aker Solutions) 62.1 billion NOK.

Company History

Akers Mekanikse Verksted based on the Aker River in Oslo began 1841., Where initially different mechanical equipment were produced later, the company lined up on the ship. In the 19th century, the company focused on whale, passenger and cargo ship and began the construction of tankers later. In the 70s of the 20th century, the company engaged in the oil market and produced oil platforms. In the 80s of the 20th century Aker merged with the company Norcem in cement production; this division was sold again in 1999.

Kjell Inge Røkke took the opportunity to acquire large corporate shares in Aker about his investment company Resource Group International. In 1996, he managed to achieve a fusion of his investment company with Aker. After the merger was the company name (company) Aker RGI.

Through its subsidiary Aker Aker Martime succeeded in 2000 to take over the Norwegian Kværner competitors. Aker Kværner Martime merged with Aker Kværner the company. The acquisition of Kvaerner succeeded, since this company was in financial difficulty in the 90s due to low world oil prices and failed its planned acquisition of the British company Trafalgar House. After the merger, the company moved back to Aker.
