Akhisar ( dt: White Castle or Castle Light ) is the county seat of the eponymous county in the province of Manisa in the Aegean region of Turkey. The city is located at an altitude of 94 m. The district is located in the northwest of the province and is bordered to the west by the province of Izmir and to the north by the province of Balıkesir.

History

In ancient times it was known as Thyatira, some ruins of which are still to be seen near the center of the city. Akhisar was conquered by the Ottomans in 1382, but went into the time of the Mongol invasion under Tamerlane lost again. 1425/6 it was reconquered by Khalil Yakschi Beg again and belonged until 1921 to the Vilayet of Aydın, then to that of Manisa. 1914, the city had 12,000 inhabitants, of whom three-quarters were Muslim. 1935, the population was 21,000.
