Akhtubinsk

Akhtubinsk (Russian Ахтубинск ) is a city in the north of Russia's Astrakhan Oblast. It has 41 853 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) and is located 270 km north-west of Astrakhan on the left bank of the Akhtuba, a Mündungsarms the Volga. The city is located only 30 km from the Kazakh border and 50 km from the famous salt lake Baskunchak.

In Akhtubinsk is an important base of the Russian Air Force and a test pilot school.

History

The city Akhtubinsk was formed from the settlements Vladimirovka (Russian Владимировка ) Petropawlowskoje ( Петропавловское ) and Akhtuba ( Ахтуба ) in 1959.
