Akiko Baba

Akiko Baba (Japanese馬場 あき子, Akiko Baba, born January 28, 1928 in Tokyo ) is a Japanese writer and literary scholar.

Baba studied classical Japanese literature. She has published studies on the medieval Japanese Noh drama, the tanka poetry, the role of women in Japanese literary history and the figure of the devil in the Japanese literature.

In addition, she wrote even modern Noh plays that were performed, among others, the National Theatre of Tokyo, and emerged as a writer of tanka. A selection of her poems from the years 1955 to 1998 appeared in English translation in 1999 under the title Heavenly Maiden Tanka.
